Leading as Exiles
Manhood, anger, and Grace

In the Book of Hebrews, we are reminded that we are "strangers and exiles" (Hebrews 11:13). Like the early Christians living in the Diaspora, we often find ourselves scattered within a culture that doesn’t share our values or understand our hope.
This creates a constant tension: How do we maintain a Christ-like standard without being consumed by the world’s chaos? This week, two concepts have resonated with me as essential tools for navigating this "exile" life in our careers and our families.
1. Anger is a Tool, Not a Flaw
Living as an exile in a chaotic world is frustrating. However, most of us were raised to believe that anger is a "bad" emotion—something to be suppressed or ignored.
Instead, try viewing anger as a signal. Its true purpose is to help you set and maintain effective boundaries around the things you value. When we lack "emotional nuance"—the ability to read the dashboard lights before the engine smokes—we only notice our anger once it becomes a wildfire.
As men of faith, the goal isn't to say, "I shouldn't be angry." The goal is to ask, "What value is being threatened?" and then take lead. Don’t just react to the chaos; lead through it.
2. The Rhythm of Grace and Mercy
When we face the friction of a culture that feels foreign, it’s easy to lose perspective on how God moves. To lead well—whether in the boardroom or the living room—we must master the distinction between Grace and Mercy:
Grace is receiving what we do not deserve.
Mercy is not receiving what we do deserve.
We operate at our best when we extend both to those around us—and to ourselves. As exiles, our "standard" isn't found in being right or being loud; it’s found in the strength of our character and the depth of our compassion.
The Challenge
Going forward, when you feel a flash of frustration, don’t bury it. Use it. Identify the boundary that needs to be set, and handle it with the quiet strength of a man who knows his worth and his true home.
Happy Friday,
May you all feel God’s grace and mercy.
